I’m checking in this week with a peaceful mindset.
We’ve been trying to recharge as Thanksgiving approaches and November winds to a close. In that spirit, I wanted to keep it simple and share a photograph and a vibe.
As we were hanging out on the beach, the sky was full of incredible light. And this one cloud was sitting alone, just above the Sea of Cortez, in the midst of a soft, beautiful sunset. I couldn’t help but try to capture the moment.
As with anything beautiful, though, scenes like this are ephemeral and the photographs never really do them justice. That’s the funny thing about trying to capture light with a camera. When the light is really good, the photograph in your memory is many times stronger than what the camera captures. This is no different. I like the photograph, I think it’s simple, and peaceful, and has something to say, but the picture in my mind is far more vivid.
And even though that happens over and over again, photographers still try to capture these scenes. We try to approximate the beauty that we see, knowing that we’ll get close and that only in the most rare circumstances, will we capture something magical. We hope, if we fall short of that magic, that we’ll at least captivate the viewer for a brief instant. And, in the best case, have them feel like they were present in the moment.
I hope you feel something like that with this photograph, if just a little bit. I hope you feel like you have your feet in the sand, with massive waves crashing in the distance, and a soft breeze coming off the water as you stare off into the horizon and into the soft glow of a Pacific sunset. Just something peaceful to think about as we head into a hectic season as the year winds to a close.
As always, thank you for reading. Please send me a note or leave a comment with any reactions, and I hope everyone has a good weekend.
I really love this photo. And I feel that sense of poorly approximating what is in my mind each time I sit down to write.
